What does the word “S” in superman clothes mean?

If U have followed the superman series from the beginning U will see that he had that “S” on his suit before he was given the name “SUPERMAN” by the media. As far as i think that clothes was made by his earth mother. So,What does the word “S” in superman clothes mean?

Mike got it right. It is the Family Shield of the house of El which is Superman's real last name. His earth mother made his first Superman suit from the blankets they found him in (which explains why they are as strong as he is)

That snake is used today by pharmacists, and it could also symbolize how Superman saves the world by getting rid of evil (illnesses were used to be thought of as evil). The creators of Superman are Jewish, and that snake is very important in some Jewish traditions.
