Depends on what you use it for, Compaq, HP, Dell etc. all major brands or good. If you just want a laptop to be able to move around, go to one of the online auction sites. You can get one for about $400. But make sure it is at least 2ghz on CPU wit 512mb memory and at least 40 gb hard drive, with dvd/cd combo. Don't buy one that has a operating older than XP SP2 as Microsoft no longer supports them. If you can try to get backup disk, or you will have to make your own.

Only YOU can decide that! Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen and write down what you expect of your PC to begin with. What types of software you would be interested in, etc.
Angie, Dell is junk! As a PC repairman, I can tell you Dell support sucks and Dell PCs arent very upgradable! If I were the average user, I would opt for HP any day!
