The answer is EPEE, - pronounced as "EPPAY", - one of THREE types of sword used in fencing! The OTHERS are RAPIER and SABRE! They all LOOK alike, - but, the way that they SCORE hits, is different! The epee, and rapier, score "HITS", with the TIP, whilst the SABRE, scores, using the EDGE of the blade, - as in a sort of "HACKING", or "SLASHING" motion. Also, I believe that the "TARGET AREA" differs, for each one!

Epée. Note the acute accent over the middle "e", though you don't need it if you're writing in upper case, which is what you usually do in crosswords.
