When I purchased my computer a year ago, I knew it was rather inexpensive as far as computers went, but it was all I could afford. I therefore invested a little more money into protecting it since I knew I could not afford another anytime soon. Free antiviral spyware--well, I am under the impression that those are not updated as often as they should be. You are better off with either McAfee (for a basic home computer) or Norton Antivirus, good for home computer and businesses alike. I have the latter, and certainly have not regretted it. It has already paid for itself in protecting my computer. It also features antispyware and other protective sheilding, and I do my part to actively monitor what goes on with my computer.
Just remember it is as much up to the owner/operator of the computer in question as it is up to the protective programs they install to ensure your safety, and that of your private information and expensive equiptment. You must do your part to prevent greater disasters with your computer in the long run that will end up costing you big time. A little now goes a long way later on.
Still, if you keep a low profile on the internet, which lessens the liklihood of something happening, free antivirus programs might still be of some use. Just beware not to use a lot of such programs at once. You may encounter more problems than they are worth.

The best security software for you should be based on your surfing and download habits.
AntiVirus programs are pretty standard. If you want to use the best AntiVirus program (and it is free), go here and get the AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the "AOL" scare you. There is not membership or email account required. It is completely free for you to use. The AV program is by Kaspersky and it is the best AV available. This first site shows how many program did in independent tests.

Here is the site for Active Virus Shield.

Antispyware is a completly different story. You really need to know about about all the different types and the programs best suited to defeat them.
I recommend you read this site.

Free programs will often give you good, basic security, but if you prefer to buy that's ok.
Check out this site http://www.mbusbyuk.info/links.html and take a look at the security article on the same site (click the Security link).
All the programs on the site are reliable and tested, so you're gonna be okay whichever you choose.
If you want any recommendations, I suggest AVG 7.5 Anti-virus, and AVG Anti-spyware.
Good Luck!
