Ficus trees can be very damaging to structures when they start to grow out of control. Usually when people plant these they are nice and pretty and they want them close to the house....bad idea. I have seen multi million dollar homes destroyed because these trees lifted the foundation and cracked the walls. Try using a large amount of ammonium nitrate around the base of the tree. Careful though, when the tree dies and the roots begin to rot, it could topple over onto whatever is nearby.

I would recommend cutting the tree down. Once the tree is down, I would use a cordless drill to drill 6-8 holes in the trunk followed by an application of round-up (non-diluted) poured (carefully) into the holes. Following treatment, I would also cover the trunk to try and prevent rain, children, or animals from coming in contact with it (until it dries).

It's never a good idea to contaminate soil in order to kill a plant. Pouring salts, gas, diesel fuel, or anything else only jeopardizes our groundwater sources and eventually pollutes our creeks, rivers, fish and habitat.
