Take classes. If you are looking into musical theater then do: Drama, Vocals, and Dance. Audition for local shows and let your star shine. If you are turned down get back on your feet and try again. Work hard and have fun.

First off, choose the roles that you WANT to do. Something you will have fun doing.
Second, don't get discouraged just because you didn't get a part. there always will be second chances. PS: I got all worked up becuase I thought I did terrible at an audition for Annie; I ended up getting the lead role I wanted: Grace Farrell!
Third, don't get cocky and become full of yourself. Saying nice things to competition and just being an all-over good person will please the directors and give you a higher spot on their totem pole.
Fourth, try out for as many things as possible. You will get lots of expirience. Dont, however, try out for something that will interfere with already-distinguised plans. It will turn your directors into steaming kettles!
Lastly, attend many shows to further your horizons and give you an idea of what shows you might like to try out for in the future!

PS: This is a no-brainer: PRACTICE!!
