Most probably do not. However, they can call the university to verify your attendance and if you were granted a degree. Some will ask for a transcript.

I only know of one employer who verified my degree. I taught for a year at MIT. I had to get a document from my graduate school that proved that I had been granted a PhD.

No, they request a copy of your diploma directly from the university or college and then comes in a sealed envelope that they must break the seal.

Companies typically check criminal and drug records when they do the back ground check.It's hard for them to do your education check.It is you who has to provide them the information in the form of transcripts(sealed) or copy of degree certifcate.
