Could Harpo Marx Speak

No he wasn't

Once, while playing a theater in Winnipeg, Manitoba during a vaudeville tour, the Marx Brothers had a disagreement with the theater's manager regarding their pay. At the end of the Marx Brothers' engagement there, the manager paid them the amount they had demanded...in several large sacks containing the proper amount in the form of pennies, nickels and dimes. Since the brothers' train was departing in ten minutes, the brothers had no choice except to lug the sacks onto the train with them. As the train departed, Harpo shouted to the manager, 'I hope your theater burns to the ground.' And that night, it did. After that time, Groucho Marx always explained that the real reason Harpo's voice was never heard on-screen was that his voice was like the axe hanging on the backstage wall of every theater: To be used only in case of emergencies. IMDB has lot's of trivia on this subject

NO. He was not dumb nor deaf! He was very very talented but vowed never to speak in any films after the first stage act he did and did not get any lines to speak. The writer his Uncle had decided that Harpo's part would be brilliant if he did not speak. Harpo did not agree with this and decided to 'ab-lib' some lines anyway. His non speaking part got great reviews but the reviewers did not like him speaking. They said he was much better not speaking. From then on in he never spoke while acting on stage or in the films.

Harpo Marx was NOT dumb, he was NOT deaf. The reason he never spoke in any of the Marx brothers films was this: In one of their first films he didnt get any lines to speak and he was really annoyed. He swore down that he would never speak in another film again, and kept that promise. Simple as that.

No he was a very good actor and actually was not dumb or deaf, he started the mute act while acting in vaudeville and it went over so well that he continued it through the years, therefore making many people think that he really was deaf and also dumb. He was a true and very funny talent, this was in a book of Hollywood talents that their character portrayed one thing and in real life they were another making people think that the actor was them in real life, another good example is Don Knotts "Barney Fife" in the Andy Griffith tv shows, he was very intelligent and caring
