Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776 after the Continental Congress (I believe it was the Second Continental Congress but don't quote me on that) voted for Independence (thought is was July 4th eh?). If I am not mistaken he wrote it in an afternoon and submitted his draft to the Congress the next day (July 3) who then took to debating and removing parts from it (most notably the section that declared slavery a crime against humanity as well as others). Finally on July 4, 1776 it was adopted by the Continental Congress as amended the day before.

Jesus Christ, it's amazing how many people don't know American history!
The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. He began writing it on June 11, 1776 and completed the draft on June 28, 1776. It was then presented to the Continental Congress for debate and approval.
The Declaration was approved and signed by all representatives of the 13 American colonies on July 4, 1776.
