For starters you need a computer with an ethernet port, a 233Mhz processor and 64 MB RAM (300MHz & 128 RAM for 2000/XP), and roughly 100MB HD space. That's the bare minimum, so you'll need to go to your local phone provider's website and see what they require.

Your provider will provide you with a DSL modem and line filters. You'll need to put these line filters on all your jacks that have phones attached to them. They're small in-line plugs that filter the "noise" from the line so you can talk on the phone (DSL is on the same line as your home phone).
The DSL modem has an ethernet port and a port for the DSL line. You simply connect your computer's ethernet port to the one on the modem via a patch cable. The phone line plugs into the DSL port, and you're done. Then you just install the software from your local provider and you're online.

You can also setup a network by installing a router between the modem and the computer. You would plug the modem into the router's WAN (Wide Area Network) port instead of the PC. The PC would connect to the router either wirelessly, or a patch cable. You would need to configure the router for internet access, which is pretty easy and every router has a quick start manual on how to do it. The benefit to a network would be that you could share internet access to all the computers in your home.

While it is not required to have a home phone line to have DSL, most local providers will give you a discount if you do. Otherwise they make you pay $50/month for the service. You come out cheaper with the phone line $15 DSL + $20 phone line = $35

A decent phone company. We had DSL and at first the connection was great now it is slower then our dial up service was. We switched to Cable. Super-fast and no problems. They supplied everything and if you get a package deal of digital phone, Internet and cable service they may give you a deal. I highly recommend Cable over DSL.

Call the DSL provider of your zone and they will just drop it in your line and send you a modem after you order it and thats it.

Check with your local provider first. We got verizon dsl and they gave us everything we needed for $25, this was a modem, and wireless device all in one.....
Besides the hardware, you will need phone line active, for the computer and hardware to connect to.....
