If you are travelling by air, you now need a passport to return to the US from Canada and Mexico. If you are travelling by ground (driving, bus, train, etc...) you will not need a passport until 1/23/2008.

Until that time, a photo ID and something that positively identifies you as a US citizen (preferably your birth certificate) is needed.

EDIT: Why the thumbs down? I deal with this issue every single day in my work, and I'm here to tell you I'm 100% correct.

I'm not sure about the Canadian border.. though I would assume it's the same or similar.. but with your drivers license and a birth certificate you can enter Mexico for something like a month.. no need for a passport unless staying longer.. I think you can also get permiso's at the border (I flew in last time so not positive) and they will allow you to stay for a while.. I think you may just need a drivers license for that.. again not positive on that aspect

Why don't you try it and find out. Actually you can cross the border all you want, but if you want to come back to this country you better have your passport or you ain't gonna make it.

i'm so sorry to hearken to about your relative. i'd advise contacting the Canadian passport workplace at modern-day, explaining the topic and soliciting for expedited provider on your new passport so that you'll enter Canada fairly and, extra importantly, get decrease back into the united statesA. As a overseas citizen, you'll favor your passport to go back to the U.S. reliable success.

If your driving, then I think that a driver's license is still ok. But if your flying, you need a passport. No exceptions.
