I think people don't like Nickelback for that same reason as stated - they talk about things that are real and honest. People only hear what they want to hear. For example, the song "Figured you out", a lot of people were offended by that. The lyrics go:
"I like your pants around your feet
I like the dirt that's on your knees
I like the way you still say please, when you're looking up at me
You're like my favorite damn disease."
Everyone hears this and blocks the rest of the song out. They ignore the actual lyrics of the song which continue to say:
"I hate the places that we go
And I hate the people that you know
And I hate the way you can't say no
Too many long lines in a row
I hate the powder on your nose"
This song reminds me of a friend I used to have who everybody loved. She loved a party, have a good time and was extremely attractive. However, she also loved to get drunk or sniff cocaine. After a while, you got tired of picking up after her when she was drunk or prying her away from strange men when she was high. Her partying got to be too much to be around and you ended up hating her in the end.

The problem I have with them is that they are generic. I just can't subscribe to the cookie cutter pop band type. Here is an example. Someday and How You Remind Me are the same song. I have a link to the flash where each one is played on each side and it is the same song. It is really bad. I would post the link but there is some potentially offensive text at the bottom.

Alright,im a fan of Nickelbacks but i have criticism over them myself.First of all, they have multiple songs on their albums with very similair guitar riffs, leading me to believe they recycle their other material. Also, you can tell how commercial they are, overplayed, possibly not in it for the music, but for the money.Chad Kroeger is a great songwriter though and i own the All the Right Reasons album.

I don't hate nickelback, but they don't offer a lot musically. All of their songs sound the same and has an overall "generic" rock sound. I get bored of simpler music quicker than complex music.

you know i would probably be a big nickleback fan if they weren't so overplayed. i think that's the problem; people get tired of hearing them all the time. and some of the songs sound a lot alike.

Probably because so many people like you try to ram it down other people's throats.
I myself prefer to listen to MUSIC rather than a BAND. I listen for what I like, not WHO I like.
