Self propelled mean that is has a mechanical means that turn the wheels so that it is much easier to push. You usually only have to walk behind and guide it in the direction that you desire, as it travels forward on its own power.

A self propelled mower is a push mower with a small gearbox that will drive either the front or back wheels. In most cases when you pull the lever, push the handle, ect., the mower will move or propel its self. There are several drawbacks to this system. One, there is a belt which transfers the power from the engine to the gears. Two, most systems when engage it, the mower only goes one speed. Three, on most variable speed systems you have to think about how hard you are pulling the lever to adjust the speed.
Toro and Lawn-boy have a very slick system for their self propelled mowers. All you have to do is push on the handle and the mower will never go faster than you. Want to go faster, walk faster and the mower will keep up. Need to slow down, just walk slower. I personally use this type of mower on my yard and I love it. Toro calls it Personal Pace, and Lawn-Boy calls it Sense-a-Speed.

Lawn mowers, in general, are moved by the one who pushes them. In the case of a self-propelled, there is a belt under the mower which joins the engine to the back wheels.
As the engine starts, you pick up a lever which is on the main handle and this stretches the belt which, in turn, gives it tension thus connecting the engine drive shaft to the back-wheel axle. As you let the lever loosen, it disconnects much like the clutch of a manual geared car.

Self propelled has a drive belt that turns the rear wheels so you do not need to push, just steer the mower. Yes they are much easier to push.

It is a regular walk behind lawn mower but when a switch is engaged the front wheels turn, pulling the mower. All you do is guide the direction.
I would only recommend it for a yard that is long and without a lot of things (trees, ornaments, etc) to mow around. It is heavier than a standard mower and a little more awkward to use otherwise.
