I can't seem to get the scunge that builds up on my straightening iron( build up from hairspray, mousse etc) off. I've tried scraping with a sharp knife, but that seems to scratch the metal. Any safe ideas?

Use Soft scrub and a sponge. Make sure you use just a tiny bit so it is easy to rinse off without damaging the appliance ( use a damped cloth or paper towel for rinsing )
