It was the US Civil War - It was the greatest war in American history.
3 million fought - 600,000 died.
It was the only war fought on American soil by Americans.
At the beginning of the Civil War, firearms of all types were in short supply. Many early volunteers were issued antiquated, imported, and nearly obsolete weapons as both sides strained to meet the demand for arms. Eventually, however, a few quality types were obtained in large numbers and became standard issue to the soldiers of both armies. The basic weapon of an infantry soldier was the single-shot, muzzle-loading percussion musket. Foremost among these was the Springfield, manufactured at the U.S. Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, and at other locations. All were generically referred to as "Springfields" by the troops. By the end of the war, total production approached 1.5 million weapons. The Springfield had a 39 inch long rifled barrel, and could fire a .58 caliber bullet effectively at targets 500 yards distant. After the Confederate capture of the Federal armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (later West Virginia), more than 64,000 Confederate copies were produced.

The American Civil War. As a percentage of the population, it killed by far more people than all the other wars America has been involved in combined. More than 600,000 died, about even on both sides and when you consider the south only had about 2 million people, including slaves, that is a huge number. I am pretty sure I am right on these numbers, but you will need to look then up just to be sure.

Civil War Why?
With the change of how warfare was fought that is the artillery , cannons, and the tactics were still in the revolutionary era so there would be many more casualities by percentage and gruesomeness. With the artillery being of greater intensity and the doctoring of wounds still primitive as was told by many of the war veterans that still alive had amputated limbs. There was well over 600,000 casualties in the civil war.

The Civil War and not just because of the sheer number of casualties (wounded and killed).
Think about it for a second...
Every single person killed and wounded during the Civil War was an American.

The American Civil War
Over 100,000 died in battle
about 65,000 died of wounds from battle
and over 180,000 died of disease
Then there's the numbers of people who died in the prison camps of various other reasons as well.
