The greatest sniper in world history was a guy named Carlos Hathcock II. He held the record for the longest confirmed kill until 2003 when a Canadian took down a Taliban fighter from a greater distance. Hathcock used a wood stock, Winchester 70 rifle with an 8X Unertl scope. His ammunition was .300 Winchester magnum rounds. The gun was basically a 30.06 and this was 1967-70 in Vietnam. The new guns are all composites so Hathcock will always be the greatest sniper of all time due to the available equipment of the day(wood stocks swell in jungle humidity). Just for giggles, he wore a white feather in his cap to taunt his quarry, it was usually the last thing they saw.

I would say that small caliber revolvers would be most popular because they are easy to fire and will travel through some ones brains many times before stopping. I always heard that the 22 was the weapon of choice for assassins.
