Educational equality issue?

What are some ways that children from the subdominant ethnic groups are at a disadvantage in education compared to classmates from the dominant culture?

there are many reasons for disadvantage due to culture, but it really depends on the specific community you are talking about. some possible issues are:

language: difficulties with the main language being used at school can impede learning across all areas of the curriculum

values: some cultures place less/more value on education than others varying the amount of support a child gets at home

racism: unfortunaltely exists within communities, if a child is made to feel uncomfortable due to their cultural background they will expend a lot energy trying to rectify this which is taken away from their learning focus

learning styles: as with all children, some cultures have distinctly different ways of learning, for example many indigenous cultures focus more on oral communication than the written word

these are what i consider to be the main difficulties based on culture, naturally they can also apply across the board to all types of families. the trick is to try and provide an inclusive education that recognises, respects and embraces diversity and difference.

sydneygal--all good reasons but you left off health. The health of children in minority ethnic groups is of much worse quality than the health of other groups. I strongly believe that prenatal health and the health of preschool children have a profound impact on later learning.

Of course that begs the question of why the health of minority children in this country is worse than the health of the majority.
