She could have an eye infection or a closed tear duct which your ped can help you with....My kids had many closed tear ducts... when it gets matted (until you get her in to the doc) take a warm washcloth andwipe her eye gently as her eye will get sore....do not force it open.

She's got conjuctivitis or "pink eye". Call your pediatrician, they'll prescribe drops (possibly even without an office visit) that will clear it right up.
There is a good chance it will clear up on it's own (warm compresses help but are hard to apply to a baby) but it's uncomfortable (I've had it myself) and REALLY CONTAGIOUS. Chances are very good it will soon show up in the other eye.
If you have any other children, you should emphasize to them the importance of washing their hands after being around the baby. Also clean all her bedding in hot water.
Just in response to the other posters, it probably isn't a blocked tear duct. 4 months is a bit old for that and they don't produce that much "gunk" (my older child had that condition shortly after birth).

Keep your little ones hands clean all the time since they are always putting their hands in their eyes. My son had this problem when he was a month old and the doctor told me to clean his eyes with johnson baby no tear shampoo with warm water a few times a day and it took about two days to clear.Just wash wash your baby's face and clean around the eyes often even after it heals and keep the hands clean to keep it from comming back.

This happened to my baby when he was just a couple of days old. I called the nurse, and she said to just wipe it all day (starting from at the nose, toward the ear) with a clean, damp cloth or cotton ball. Do this whenever you see eye buggers start to build back up, and this should clear it. It's very common at this age b/c their hands are always at their face. If it doesn't clear up in a few days on its own, then call the doc.

My son had the same problem. His pediatrician said his tear duct was blocked. She said it usually will work itself out before any invasive action would be taken. I simpy used a soft washcloth damp with warm water and wiped his eyes several times a day. I think it took a month or so to clear up. If it is excessive, then see your pediatrician.

call her doctor. sounds like she has pink eye. in the mean time do warm compresses to bring all the gunk out of her eye. So put a warm washcloth on her eye but dont use the same side on the other eye or touch it to her eye again. that will spread the bacteria. but definately call her doctor.

She more than likely has conjuntavitius(SP?) It's an eye infection. You need to take her to the doctor.
