Univeristy of Phoenix? DeVry? Any suggestions? Prices? Reputation? Best school that employers would look at as a good education? Thanks!

An MBA from an online university is worth nothing. It is worth less than nothing -- because it will actually make it harder for you to get a good job.

If you can get an MBA from a top 15 school, you are likely to increase your salary by 50%-100% and can go into any field. If you get an MBA from a ranked school outside the top 15, you will be able to increase your salary and change fields. The benefits decrease as the ranking decreases.

An MBA from an unranked school might be worth while if your company pays for it and you plan to stay with that company. Otherwise, it will do little to improve your job prospects or your salary.

An MBA from an online school is likely to send you in another direction. Employers will not take it seriously. A recent NY Times article on The University of Phoenix pointed out that employers call their MBA the "MBA Lite" because it has so little substance. Employers like Intel refuse to pay for their employees to take classes there because they believe they are not rigorous enough.

The school is a For Profit corporation that recently paid a $9.8MM fine for sleazy recruiting practices. It is currently being investigated for lying about their placement numbers. Online schools are less expensive than prestigious private universities -- but more expensive than good public universities.

The school is not selective -- accepting nearly everyone who applies. It is locally accredited, but lacks the more prestigious national accreditation. The NYT article points out that they have not applied for national accreditation because they know that it would be denied.

Avoid online degrees.

Do not get an MBA from an on-line university. Most of them are For Profit corporations that accept nearly anyone and provide what the New York Times calls "MBA Light." The University of Phoenix recently paid a $9.8MM fine for sleazy recruiting practices. They are now under investigation for padding their placement numbers. They have local accreditation but are missing any prestigious national accreditation. Companies like Intel have recently announced that they will not pay for their employees to take classes there. In fact -- I would not recommend anyone getting an MBA from a school that is not ranked. If you get an MBA from a top 15 school, you will be able to switch fields and increase your salary by 50%-100%. A ranked school will increase your salary & help you get a good job -- but not as much as a top 15 school. An MBA from an unranked school really won't help you get a job and may help you a little in the salary department if you stay in your current job. Otherwise, it does little for you. There are some traditional Brick & Mortar universities that use distance learning. Duke University's Fuqua School of Business has a couple programs that combine classroom education with distance learning. Graduates get a real Duke MBA and have access to their placement office. It is expensive -- but it is a real MBA.
