We have done that all our life didn't we?
We went to school because dad wanted to.
We slept early because mom wanted to.
Now we grow up and subconsciously we do not do things which might make our best friends or life partners unhappy.
I guess we do change, but some people don't probably because they don't care.
Most of the changes that happen is for our good. Think about it how many people quit smoking because their partner didn't want them to.

It is possible to change our behaviors, however if it is not for the right reasons, or if it is not genuine then, it will all be for naught. It is important to explore with a counselor why it is exactly that you want to change yourself. I believe that any change for the better is a good thing, but it is important that you have support. Change is not expected to be an instant process, for example you can not just say, “Ok today I will like eating raw sushi” after a life time of distaste for fish in general. I am not saying that it is impossible, but difficult. Granted my examples are crude at best. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a technique to assist with something such as this (not the fish thing). Usually just needing to do some minor or major cognitive restructuring.

If it is in a healty way, yes. If you are careless about your appearance but someone whom you respect encourages you to put more effort into it, that is good. If on the other hand this person insists that you dress in a way that makes you uncomfortable just to please them, that is bad. If you tend to be afraid to try something new and this persone supports you and encourages you that is good. If they force you to do things you really don't want to do that is bad.
You can change many things about yourself if you believe they really need improvement. But if you try to be something that you are not, you will fail.

If you mean can you change your overall personality, then no. I wouldn't even try to if I could. To me, trying to be something or someone you're not would be an insult. If people want something in your personality that you don't have, then that's tough for them. They're just going to have to live with it, and if they don't want to, then they're probably not worth your time.
