Most of todays trades are known as "rental players" which means the player only has the remainder of this year on there contract anyways so in this case the Blue's would rather trade him today then get stuck with nothing when his contract expires over the summer. However don't be surprised to see Guerin re-sign with St Louis over the summer.

They couldn't sign Guerin to a new deal. I wonder if that means if he was just as happy to move on himself. All they could do is trade him, and try build on their future as they aren't doing well now. It's the best time to trade as people would give up the future for a chance at the cup. Guerin is 36, not many hockey years left.

StL sure had a fire sale. Traded their top two scorers and top scoring defensman.

Simple...he is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and could (and likely would) leave and the Blues get nothing in return. This way they can continue to rebuild with younger players and with all the extra picks and players they've gotten this week have a better chance of not only rebuilding but adding depth. The lack of depth in the minors and missing on picks is a large part of why they are now struggling (along with the cheap former ownership). Davidson is a smart man and has the understanding needed to rebuild so while is sucks to see your best players get shipped out in the long run it should pay off.

As much as I hated to see Guerin leave the Blues (THE Fantasy sleeper pick btw), it was absolutely the right move. With the Guerin and Tkachuk trades, the Blues have gotten themselves 3, yes 3, first round draft picks next year, not to mention decent players with NHL experience.

I fully expect to see Tkachuk back next year. Atlanta probably won't be able to re-sign him. It will be like happened with Doug Weight.

Guerin is a differnt story. The only reason he wanted to be traded was so he ould be in the playoffs. Mission Accomplished. Now, if he does well in the playoffs, and with Thornton, Marleau, and Cheechoo it shouldn't be hard, other teams may perk up to sign him. Going back to St. Louis is a definite possibility, but if a team like Ottawa, Toronto, or even Minnesota signed him, I wouldn't be surprised. But I'd love to see him back in the Note next year.

Davidson did an outstanding job this season. The next few years should be exciting for the Blues organization. Throw in Erik Johnson, and we could be scary in the next 2-3 years.

Now, if we only could've traded Brewer while his value was high. I can't believe teams wanted him. Have you not seen him play D? His head is always swiveling. It's like watching Linda Blair from 'The Exorcist.'

Another Rent a player situation - guerin is UFA at season's end and won't fit the Sharks new cap - Blues can resign and get a pick and some prospects too - Blues cleaned up this week - maybe they'll be decent one day

Because they are terrible and in a rebuilding process. They just traded their top offensive players and top offensive defensman. They are throwing in the towel. Good luck in the rebuilding process. It took my team 4-5 years to get good again.

If your not winning (or even contending) for the Stanley Cup - then it becomes a financial decision. Seemed better to management to have several lower priced players and/or draft choices than one big superstar.

Sounds to me like a class orginization letting him compete for the Cup and helping themselves for the future.
