Keep in mind that these are the same people who spat on a group of black teenagers who were allowed to attend a white school in Arkansas back in 1959 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Rock_Nine). They're the same people who set their dogs on civil rights marchers and attacked and threatened to kill the Freedom Riders. Ironically enough, they're still racists in addition to being homophobes. But when most people look back at history, they see these people for what they truly were. Things are tough now, but they're fighting hard because they're in their death throes. Fifty years from now (or even less) people will see them for what they are, and they will be shunned and reviled by most of society. It's happening already. We just have to be patient, sucky though it may be, and take hope from the fact that they're so aggressive and vocal because this is their last, dying gasp. In fact, their tactics are turning more people against them, so they're actually shooting themselves in the foot. I think good ol' KKK/Doris/Lulu/Olga/Whatever has probably helped more moderates become pro-gay than any of us could have done by being rational and polite. They see themselves in him/her and they don't like that.
I found a good op-ed piece on just this subject at http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07053/763968-109.stm

They are religious people but not necessarily spiritual or good people or even people you'd want to be around in times of great stress, no matter your orientation. The computer age has opened up a whole new world for people to spew hatred on others, even in a place this.

Because they follow their own teachings selectively. The bible is full of references to slavery, shellfish, stonings (no, not the kind Cheech and Chong are known for) and all sorts of other things that have fallen out of fashion. The problem is, when you start countering religious hypocrisy with logic, its literal conclusion is that you can completely disprove the entire concept of "faith-based" beliefs.

It is a sad fact about human nature.
It is not limited to the religious fundies for I have seen gays that claim to celebrate diversity and yet will insult and call names anyone with differing views.
Just browse the Religion spirituality and you can see the hatred spewed on Christians.
You would think so called victims of oppression would hesitate before they themselves oppress others but that does not seem to be the case.

Didn't you know? we're all God's children until we choose to be gay (AS IF!). So of course to their dogmatised minds they're doing the world a service by fighting the agents of Satan (LOL!)
The Archangels Gabriel and Michael both have blood on their hands... AND it's their way of respecting Jesus' commandment of "Love one another..." they just pervert it with the adage "You've got to be cruel to be kind" (Although where it says that in the Bible, I've yet to find out).

Oh they are God's children, the problem lies with the fact that they are also all God's Brats as well.
Seriously though, I don't understand it myself. They condemn, cajole, attack, curse, swear, accuse, and more, yet they forget the simplest of lessons taught by the man they supposedly worship. Christ himself made it quite clear: "Do not point to the splinter in another mans eye without first removing the beam in your own", I swear they don't get it.

I really agree-- I think they are a sad little lot with some pent up feelings. I'll tell you this, too, if the intent was to reach out-- BIG failure. If the intent was to make sure that gay people automatially close off from "Christians" then, well-done.

Maybe those believers need the solution, as recommended by Suzanne Hinn (Reverend Benny Hinn's wife), attached:
