My youngest daughter has the same dilemma. I suggested that she start with napkins because it takes some getting used to the tampons. Some cultures do not believe in using the tampons, so that might be a consideration for some. As far as type and brand, you just have to experiment with the heaviness of the flow and the demands of your cycle so you have the right product for you. That is why there are so many choices... we have so many different bodies!

Tampons are very useful for a more carefree way of living with your period. I've been using them since I was 14.
I would recommend starting with a plastic applicator type in the smallest size available (i.e., slim). I personally use Kotex Security, although I hear that Playtex Pearl is also a good brand.
Read and follow ALL the instructions and change your tampon every 3-4 hours or sooner if you have leakage. You may find that on your heavy period days, a higher absorbency tampon is more useful.

That's entirely up to you, but you should be aware that there is an absolutely huge variety of choices. I like to use the ones with the pointy ends since I think they make for the easiest insertion. Also be aware that it is important to find the right-sized tampons for yourself. Most tampons are developed to be most effective for women who wear a size 6; so if you're bigger than that, you might want to go with the super-absorbant types, or even with pads or Insteads.

I feel more comfortable using tampons that just wearing a pad. It's different for all females. I recommend trying different products but sticking with name brands. There are different types as well. Regular or super, for heavy flow days. You'll feel more confident wearing a tampon too! Welcome to womanhood!

I'd use something like Tampax pearl (with applicators). Those would be more comfortable than using one without an applicator or with a cardboard one.
Remember, if your period is heavy (a lot of blood) use a heavier one. But if it's not, try to stick with the lightest absorbancy!
Good luck!

i started mine at the age of nine, didn't start using tampons until age 15 however i never regretted using them they are much more comfortable -- use playtex make sure u dont get the cardboard applicators and ur going to need pantiliners and always gentle wipes start with the lowest flow size first then proceed from there ... good luck -- pads are freaking nasty and they make u feel dirty like u have on a big diaper those who say that it hurts are using them improperly

Do not be pressured into using a tampon. It is ok to use a pad, I do not like tampons becasue they just arent comfortable. But when it comes to going swimming or something you are going to have to use a tampon. But just use the pad and make sure you have it on right and dont let it leak or anything. Remember you are not alone. Talk to you friends or to your mom. They will help you :)

i thought it was going to be really hard and scary to use a tampon but they are amazing!
because pads are GORSS!!
the best brand i think is the tampax pearl.
but sometimes i buy the generic brand ( cardboard aplicators) just to save a bit of extra money.
but dont worry in the end it wont be that hard or scary!

Will try a pad for starters if it don't work for you then use tampons. I can't wear pads cause i'll have a heat rash so I have to wear a tampon. Their no that bad it just take getting use to.

Tampex Pearl. All the way! They're plastic and painless. Yeah...tampons are way better. They're a lot cleaner and more sanitary. Plus, they last up to 8 hours....while you have to change a pad way more often that that! So...I definitly recommend tampons.
