Speeches by Prime Minister Winston Churchill inspired the Brits and the Commonwealth after the fall of France as they were left on their own to face the Nazi's.

At that stage the US didn't want to be involved preferring to profiteer from the sales of arms to the Brits and the Germans.
If the Japs hadn't attacked Pearl Harbour the US would probably have sat out the war.
