I'm looking to place 2-3 cameras around the entrance to a rural farm and ranch, as the property has had multiple break-ins recently.

The X-10 is a good low priced solution. You can find several different configurations both wireless and wired, low light and regular, pan & tilt with browser based software recording controlls. They even have motion detectors and email allerts. They sometimes leave a bit to be desired in the resolution area.

Higher end cameras with pan & tilt systems from Panasonic for around $180 - 300 (Panasonic BL-C30) per camera with all the control software and heat sensing that causes the camera to center on movement included.

Get a couple of dogs and take martial arts while you're at it. Someone might cut the power and then you're screwed.
