Serviced last week Cam belt did not need changing as it had done only 35,000 usually change it every 55,000 well below recommended by manufacturer. Yesterday big bang, cambelt shredded. Damage to several valves and their guides. Anyone know why as there does not appear to be anything that could have caused this to happen. Doing 50 miles per hour on a country road when this happpen.

Cam belts have time as an interval as well as milegae so it should be something like 60,000 miles OR 5 years, whichever comes first. I don't know what the intervals are for your car but you should find this in your manual.

The belt on your engine can't be seen without major stripping of it so no-one would be able to see what condition it was in anyway.

The cam belts are kinda weird they may look good one day and then break the next!!! i have had timing chains do the same thing. and if the looked at it when they serviced it then there is a possibility that the mechanics made a mistake while looking at it.

Sounds like a case against the service people. Did they specifically (in writing??, or ticked box on report form?) report the belt was OK?

in your case it sounds like the water pump or one of the belt tensioner or idlers have seized up, very unlucky but these should of been changed with the belt, some garages do and some don't, check your last bill and see if these were changed when the belt was done
