Ignore advice saying to teach yourself through tablature for one. Tablature is a by-rote method that does not teach anything about music tones, music theory, or musical timing. I hate tab.

You need an advisor/teacher/experienced person. This is an art form, and part science. You need to know how to tune a guitar, how to handle a guitar, and then how to play the guitar. Even a really, really good video or book won't do that.

My advice to find a teacher cheap is to look in your local classified ads, and then turn to local music shops that teach. Your rate is expected to be about $20 per half-hour in either case.

u could get some books/cds from ur local library and teach urself . or if u learn better with someone teaching u ( like a lot of people ) ... maybe check ur local career/trade center . or if u dont have one of those where u live maybe check ur highschool ... maybe if u have a nice music teacher they will teach u how to play the guitar for free or for cheap .
good luck . ( i'm also trying to learn how to play the guitar . ) what kind of guitars do u have ?
i hope this helps u .

Go to a store that sells really cheap guitars, they may hook you up with a dude that can provide a snort on the side. All humor aside, larger communities often have music classes subsidized with block grant money. I would check with the public librarian.

I spend a lot of time teaching music theory, so, I took what I knew about that and taught myself how to play guitar, piano, organ, flute, and violin.... Try teaching yourself music theory and go on from there! Best of luck to ya:)

On youtube some people show how to play the guitar on video.
Search at www.youtube.com for guitar lesson, or guitar beginners etc.

Here are a few clips
