My daughter is seventeen and beginning her fourth month of pregnancy. she has placenta privia and has been hospitalized twice in the last week for severe bleeding and pain. The doctor has done 2 ultrasounds during this time and says that the baby is healthy. I saw the ultrasounds. The first was an internal. The baby was moving great and had a heartbeat in the 160's. It was a beautiful site. The second ultrasound was outside and done today. It wasn't as clear as the first one but you could still see the baby and it's little heart beating. the doctor said it was still healthy and still has a heartbeat in the 160's. I've never known anyone with this and we are both scared for the baby and for her. Is there anyone out there who has had placenta privia or knows about it and can help us to understand? Also all those out there who read this and believe in prayer please pray for us. I'm on emergency medical leave and also have no income coming in for now. She is on strict bedrest and needs me.

Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix. It is a serious condition that can lead to heavy bleeding, hemorrhage, possible fetal mortality and possible maternal mortality. However, the last two items are rarer now since medical science has advanced considerably in the last 25 years.

The best thing is to follow the doctor's instructions to the letter. Your daughter will probably remain in the hospital for the remainder of her pregnancy due to the above mentioned risks.

She will probably deliver a pre-term baby because of the strain placed on the cervical opening in the last weeks of pregnancy. The more strain, the greater the likelihood of heavy bleeding. She will also be delivered Cesarean section, because the previa will prevent a vaginal birth again because of the risk of bleeding.

Your daughter's doctor is probably the best source of information. So you need to discuss your concerns and ask your questions of him/her

Placenta praevia (placenta previa AE) is an obstetric complication that can occur in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. It can some times occur in the latter part of the first trimester. It is a leading cause of antepartum haemorrhage (vaginal bleeding) and is characterised by the implantation of the placenta over or near the top of the cervix. It affects approximately 0.5% of all labours.

What is placenta previa?
If you have placenta previa, it means that your placenta is lying unusually low in your uterus, next to or covering your cervix. The placenta is the pancake-shaped organ — normally located near the top of the uterus — that supplies your baby with nutrients through the umbilical cord.

The placenta is the organ that forms and attaches to both the uterus and the baby. The placenta is the means by which the baby is nourished. In placenta previa, the placenta forms low in the uterus and my cover part of the cervix. Please read the link below for a better medical explanation.
