I agree with comment above, you probobly need to to a shop really and get a feel for the weight of the bat and also like the comment above, I would have a look in Bourne Sports in Stoke.
If that is too far for you to travel then there must be a good "proper" sports shop locally to you, try asking around at your local club or your mates.

With regards to the make then I wouldn't worry too much and I wouldn't discard GM, GN and Woodworm. Try them all and you will just know which is the best for you but be warned that good bats do not come cheap and I wouldn't spend less that £70/80 for something that will last more than an over.

At that price most of the bats will be pretty similar in terms of quality so it is important to get the correct weight rather that the brand, you can always take the stickers off if you so wish.

Once you have decided which bat you like the feel of then I suggest that you buy from Bourne Sports internet site or similar.

Hope this helps.

The Slazenger V Series are very good with a nice middle and I find them good for timing. My current bat is the Slazenger SXI Ultimate which I find is great and is quite reasonable at around £160.

My last 2 bats before this were Albion and the other was a Hunts County - both very good bats and very easy to middle. The Hunts County split at the bottom from a very quick yorker.

Go on spend a bit I reckon any less than £130 and you're gonna be struggling to buy a decent bat. You can get them a bit cheaper on ebay. Also there are various websites that offer good sales.

However, If you buy a bat new you can select the weight and if you want it lighter you can plane a small amount of the back of the bat to customize the pickup (Only do this though if you know what you're doing otherwise it could be a very costly mistake). I customize my bats, also I add grips, (I currently have three on my bat) this changes the pickup and there is less vibration from the bat when striking the ball.

I recommend going into a shop (try Bourne Sports in Stoke-on-Trent) and test the pickup of the bat you are going to buy. You should ignore the price and go for the one you feel most comfortable with. Bourne Sports are tremendous and every bat I have bought including the Gray Nicholls and Gunn & Moore bats in the past have been excellent. Talk to a specialist and make sure you are completely happy with the bat, also make sure you test holding it with a pair of batting gloves on, this can make a difference to the feel of a bat.

It is important to note that even bats of exactly the same weight have a different feel and pickup so try getting into a shop to test before you buy.

I always buy Long Handle bats because of my height.

I always thought that heavy and lighter bats should not be an issue because there must be a standard weight but a bat can be long handle or short handle. If you are like Dhoni you would prefer a long handle cricket bat but nowadays everyone seems to be using short handle bats. I like Kookaburra the best but it ain't cheap.

Duncan Fearnley, seem to be good bats, with a nice middle. I know some of the ones made on the sub continent seem lighter. Look at the World cup and see if there are any makes available.

Sunridges makes bats that are pretty cheap and good, and you can chose the weight of the bat, for light bats their bat is called Sunridges Impact, for heavy its called Sunridges Momentum, i can;t remember the medium ones name now.
