For example, someone who might believe that past events that occurred many centuries ago can be changed in the near or distant future. Or someone who believes a message only intended for one person applies to the entire current living population. Do some people really believe these things to be true?

I imagine so. Come up with a religion or belief and someone, somewhere will buy into it.
Many people are just searching for something to believe in.
