Unlike CD-r's which standardized on one recording format, recordable DVD's came out in several INCOMPATIBLE recording formats. Fortunately many manufactureres of DVD burners made sure all bases were covered and made their units compatible with both formats. HOWEVER, if you have a stand alone DVD recorder you need to be aware of recording in DVD-R VR mode. If you record it that mode you WILL NOT be able to play that DVD in older DVD players that do not support VR mode.

I don't think there's a lot of difference...someone told me it just has to do with the formatting.

format, +r means rewriteable multi time, -r means only once
