Chem Dry uses a carbonation type of cleaning for carpets and upholstery. A chemical is sprayed onto the carpet and buffed out, and the dirt is supposed to come out onto the buffing cloth.
Most carpet manufactures recommend "steam cleaning"
It is called steam cleaning, although it is actually hot water extraction.
I use
Nu-Mode Rug Cleaning, from Lowell
The owner does all the work himself, nice and friendly, he took the business over from his father, I got them from my mom who has used them for a long time. not sure if they go all the way to Franklin or not, but they are the best.

Most Chemdry franchises now clean with the Powerhead (CTS 330 or 450), or the newest technology as of 2013, the XTS - Cross Over Truck Mount System. This equipment is not a buffer or pad system, but a circular stainless equipment that has multiple "jets" to spray the non chemical hot carbonating solution into the carpet and then the dirt and water is extracted. Carpets are drier because of this type of equipment in about 2 to 3 hours. If you look at pictures for steam cleaners, even ZeroRez they use a rectangular stainless steel tool that brushes the carpet fibers back and forth. ChemDry, (although not necessarily all franchises) clean with the powerhead which gently agitates and scrubs the carpet fibers in a circular motion, for maximum soil removal. ChemDry's cleaning solution is all natural, no chemicals, no soaps, no residue. You can drink it. The only "chemicals" ChemDry has are in the specialty stain removal products.
