in messiness, but who I care about a great deal. I don't think she has always been this way. From conversations we've had I think it ties back into something her ex did and said many, many years ago. Besides that evidence, there's a certain way she lays her belongings around, certain things she owns and other tell-tell signs that say she used to be tidy and even had a flare for decorating. What can I do to help her?

Ask her gently why she lets her house get so messy - say she doesn't seem the kind of person to be living in so messy a house.
Listen to her and ask leading questions by rephrasing what she says into a question. For example, if she says, I don't feel good about my furniture, ask - Your furniture makes you feel bad? By doing this you may get to the root cause of her strange messiness - and you may not.
It's most important to be her friend. And tell her that, if ever she feels like cleaning the place, you will bring your own shovel! (Be sure to say it in a funny way.)

i would tread very softly my house is a mess sometimes and my car is a mess at times too but i have very good reasons for it like not being home alot due to a illness in the family and one persons junk is another womans treasure but if you feel that you have to try something to help your friend invite her to your house for a lil spring cleaning party then tell her its her turn next she might just need a jump start

i lay my belongings everywhere too, maybe she just found out that there's no point in tidiing things when you know that they will be messed up again.i think u r the one that needs help!
