That just can't be safe. Plus you wouldn't be able to get edges and it probably wouldn't be even. I wouldn't recommend it.
If you really want it short invite a whole bunch of people over for a carpet-cutting party. As long as you provide incentive (like food), I don't see why some people wouldn't come with their scissors to help you out. Some may even come without incentive (I know some of my friends would). It could actually wind up being a fun, memorable experience.
