IN. there are two negitaves, 'opposite' and 'not', therefore they cancel, and it becomes 'in'.

I'm honestly a little confused.

Not in and Out are not opposites. If you are speaking of social groups, than though they might not be complete synonyms of each other, they are related.

In might not be the complete opposite of Not in, but In would be the opposite of Out.

It seems similar to the glass: Is it half-empty or half-full? This is creative also.

Out is easy to jump to, as a first response. Or, Not Out, but this would be a double negative, right? IN, is logical.

In logic terms it has to in. Out does not fit in any context as if something is not in it is out so they are synonyms (I know to be a synonym it should be one word but you get my meaning).

You could argue the opposite is not out.

Honestly, when I first read it, I thought out, but then I reread it and realized if something is NOT IN, it is out. Therefore, the opposite of out is in!!

The opposite of "not in" is "in". It cannot possibly be "out", because "not in" means "out". "Not in" (out) and "in" (not out) are antonyms.
