I love Downy Simple Pleasures fabric softners and dryer sheets. But, I only use frangrance-free detergent (like Tide Free), because too many scents can make your clothes smell worse. I suggest finding a fabric softer and dryer sheet with matching scents and using a fragrance-free detergent for best results. That way you have one scent going through your clothes--instead of two or three :)

Well, it could be the water. If you have hard water or heavily treated water, it may be blocking the lovely smell of your detergents and fabric softeners. If you have to opportunity, try using a liquid fabric softener in the last rinse cycle of your wash and then after the last spin cycle, hang your clothes outside in a fairly sunny place. Get fresh air to it and not a closed up, hot dryer. If you don't have a clothes line, you can get one for under $10 at IKEA that folds up when you aren't using it. And they have larger ones as well if needed. Upside, you're getting fresh air into your clothes. Downside, over many washings and prolonged sun exposure, you could lose some color in your clothes. Or, try Frebreeze. Good luck!

Try Suavitel liquid softener. The blue bottle works the best. They sell this brand at Target and Walmart. I love how my clothes smell and the fragrance lasts over a long time.. (2 weeks +) I use the liquid and dont even need a dryer sheet!!! Use the suggested amount and you will see it really does work. Also, its usually less expensive than the other name brands. This brand is primarily marketed to the Latino market, but I dont really care about that so much, it works wonders. I had a friend that always had such a clean crisp lingering scent, and I asked what soap he was using, he said i use the suavitel fabric softener and man does it work! Trust me on this !!! I ahve used all the designer fragrences, tide, gain, all, etc. nothing compares to this.

Do you hang your clothes out in the fresh air? this make´s a great difference to clothes,They don´t have the same smell if you put them in the dryer, sure you find a difference in smell once they have been outside , even when you iron them if you use the softener you should still smell the soap plus the softener. I do, Fresh

Theres an off chance it could be your water. There is also a chance you are asking you clothes to smell what seems like fresh to you, that is, a specific scent. If you want your clothes to smell like something in paricular, like the smell of Gain in your friends laundry that is different from smelling clean to another person. If the same products don't give you the same results, then its probably is the water as hardness/softness, gives different results. I iron my sheets with lavender water for a nice fragrant finish, but I don't know if you want to get that nuts for kids clothes.

It could be water or your washing maching. Have you ever washed your washer with washer cleanser? And also I want to recommend you 'MelaPower' laundry detergent because it removes build-up from your clothes, which is built up from your water and even detergent and causes your clothes smell bad. At the same time it is made of biodegradable ingredients so it's really good to your children's skin.

The one who gave you the clothes may have stored them in a drawer with "satchets." This would leave a lingering scent on the clothes.
To get the maximum impact of fabric softner, try washing your clothes as you normally would but pour in a couple of cap fulls of Hydrogen Peroxide. This will help to remove any body odors so the scent can be stronger.

I read the other answers, and I would go back to basics.
Try adding plain baking soda to your water as it fills the tub along with the detergent that you use. I would use approximately
1/4 cup to a normal load.
If that doesn't work, try adding 1/4 cup of vinegar to the wash water instead of baking soda.
Hope this will freshen your laundry.

Sometimes I'll put a drop of my fav body wash in the washer. For example my current fav is a body wash that smells like lavender, so my clothes come out of the washer smelling like lavender.

I've had good luck with Arm & Hammer laundry detergents. Even for the seriuosly nasty stuff I get from working as a handyman. Some times I come home stinking like you wouldn't believe.
