Because they are hypocrites. They like to kill babies through abortion but they like to save the the rapists/murderers through the death penalty.

Not all liberals are for abortion and against capital punishment so that's a pretty general statement. I could say something like why are conservatives AGAINST abortion but FOR capital punishment. Does that summarize all conservatives as well? no.
But to answer the abortion question has to do with the perception of when a person becomes a 'person'. If you believe that a person becomes a 'person' upon being conceived then you will be against abortion. If you believe that a person becomes a 'person' when the brain develops and believe in a woman's right to choose then you will be for abortion up until a certain point (ie the second trimester or whatever it is).
With capital punishment, the person being convicted is a person and there is a risk that they could be not-guilty of the crime. Sentencing someone to death and later discovering that they were innocent would be devastating.
As you can see the two issues are much more divergent than thinking of them on simplistic terms such as the fact that they "both are killing people". or something like that. It's like saying that murder and killing in self defense (ie the person was in the process of attempting to kill you) should be treated the exact same.
These are complex issues so don't think of them on a simplistic level.

Ask our self the same question, but this time in reverse: "Why are conservatives in favor of capital punishment and so against abortion"?
Well, if you look at it the liberals, they have a hand in saving this country thousands, possibly millions of dollars in tax spending because there will be no need to finance a child's education and other social services if an abortion proceeds. This money then can be use to reduce the national debt, which has skyrocketed in the last 6 years, finally help fund universal healthcare and provide much need relief to economically and environmentally-stricken regions of this country (e.g, New Orleans, Appalachia, etc.)
Then look at it at a conservative point of view, they are against abortion because they won't have the manpower to fight another stupid war to defend their self-interests. Minorities tend to have abortions much more frequently than whites, therefore the prospect of not having enough African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, and Natives to complete "Operation Human Shield" would be a nightmare for them.
Hope that helps paint an understandable portrait.

Separate issues. Actually, many Americans are rethinking their views on the death penalty- conservatives and liberals. According to a Gallup Poll in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Why this change- Americans are finding out the facts about the death penalty. Here are a few, verifiable and sourced.
Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever, is certainly no picnic. Life without parole incapacitates a killer (keeps him from re-offending) and costs considerably less than the death penalty.
Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. Many had already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person we are not likely to find that out and, also, the real criminal is still out there.
Re: DNA
DNA is available in no more than 10% of murder cases. It is not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.
Re: Appeals
Our appeals system is designed to make sure that the trial was in accord with constitutional standards, not to second guess whether the defendant was actually innocent. It is very difficult to get evidence of innocence introduced before an appeals court.
Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)
Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.
Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??
Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.
Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not revenge or an eye for an eye mentality. And not simply because they are or are not liberals.

For one thing, many people are incorrectly sent to death row each year. Check the stats for death row reversals in Texas last year based upon DNA analysis. It may seem a paltry number to you, but if you were one of the few to have such a conviction overturned, you would understand why people oppose capital punishment. Essentially, there is a risk you will be executed for a crime you didn't commit.
And re: abortion... nothing wrong with it, so long as it is pre-viability.

Most liberals (and a large number of conservatives, by the way) are for CHOICE, not abortion. That means it's the woman's choice, and none of your business (or mine).
The arguments against capital punishment are simple: it doesn't work as a "deterrent" (proven), it's more expensive than life in prison with no parole (proven), and it's government killing people -- there is no upside besides "revenge."
Clear enough?

You speak in generalizations. I will speak for myself (as a left leaning American). I am FOR choice, I am NOT FOR abortion. Once you understand this (if you ever do) you will see that the abortion issue and capital punishment are not linked the way you wish them to be.

severe breakdown in their logic system, which is the same breakdown that conservatives who are for capital punishment and against abortion have.
the logical position is pro-life. (anti-abortion, anti-capital punishment)

That's a mighty GENERAL statement, there, buddy. You certainly assume alot. One could ask the same question of conservatives and it would be just as ridiculous.
By the way I am a liberal leaning centrist and I oppose both.

Yet another know-nothing displays its ignorance in public.
Half of the neo-convicts in the Whorehouse, senate and house, including Chicken George (who raped a woman and forced her to have an abortion), have violated the "family values" they all whine about, including drugs, kiddie porn, rape, child molesting, sexual perversions, and all-round financial criminal acts.
