It depends on who is sending the cheque. I was due a tax rebate, and, of course i didn't get the cheque until after the end of the finantial year...........six months it took them!!

First, because they can. The longer they wait, the more "float" a company has with your money. Basically, if they hold your money an extra month, they can get an extra month's interest.
Second, because the rebate houses honestly need to process thousands of rebates a day. It can take time to get around to opening YOUR rebate, checking it, and accepting it.
Third, to make things easy, some rebate houses only cut checks once a month (or some other schedule). So, if your rebate is approved on, say, March 2, the check won't be cut until April 1.
