I recently brought a female guppy that was pregnant you can see all the eyes of her fry, we are new to breeding fish and dont no when to put her in the breeding box to have them, we are worried that she + 2 others will eat them if we leave her in the tank to have them but we have got plants for the fry to hide in if we dont put her in soon enough. We have put her in the breeder box but she just jumped out, any info would be appreciated thanks

I had the same problem, I recommend buying breeder grass. It is round and has very dense leaves that allow a lot of room for the fry to hide. You can allow it to float upside down or you can put it in the bottom of your tank. I started with 3 guppies - I now have close to 100, all of which are healthy and beautiful. I love guppies - and they aren't hard to keep. I didn't like using the breeder box. It is highly likely that the mother will eat all the fry when they are born. They have a better chance of surviving in the tank with breeder grass, and some other good hiding places. The grass should not be hard to find - I live in a rural area and bought it at a local, small pet store.

As long as you have plants in the tank they will hide so don't worry. The breeder box is nice (it's really an extra purchase you could do without). But if you have plenty of plants they will do just fine, I also have guppies and they keep have babies I like that if you get mollies they too are live breeder just like guppies plus they get alone with guppies so put some of them in the tank too. Have fun. Oh word to the wise for every one male guppie have at lease two to three female guppie because they breed alot and if you don't the female will die same goes with mollies.

I'm not sure how big your breeder box is, but maybe you need a bigger one. If she does end up giving birth in the breeder box, make sure you take her out when you're pretty sure she's had all her babies. It's not the end of the world if she doesn't give birth in the breeder box. The babies are really fast and hard to see. The first time our guppy had babies, she'd already had one before I could get her into the breeder box. I assumed that baby would be eaten, but two weeks later I saw him swimming around. And he was twice the size of the babies still in the breeder box!

We've really had fun breeding guppies. Feel free to email me..

If you can see the eyes of the fry then she is ready to have them any time. you can put her in the breed box or whatever you want now. the others will eat them and so will the mom, the pet store sells a breeding box that has small slits in it that allow the fry to separate them from the mom and other fish. I use that type to get as many of the fry to survive as possible. hope this helps..

I wouldn't put your guppy in a breeding box. I f your fish have babies, they will hide. A breeding box just puts more stress to your fish and makes it harder for guppies to have their young.

You don't want all her young anyway, enough will survive. However, for max. protection, go to the aquarium shoppe, and see if they have a plant that is so finely leaved, it looks like a clump of algae. I forgot the name, but the small fry can hide in it.
