I have found a helpful link, but the information on it is not encouraging, except that there are statutory maximum periods for which someone can be detained in Spain in this way. He really must go to the British consulate to see whether anything can be done. http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:c9IyfJ_6hDkJ:www.spainlawyer.com/guialegal/guialegal.cfm%3FIDCAPITULO%3D17040000+provisional+bail+spain&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1

Yes, as all the other responders have said, you need a Representative from the British Embassy to hear the case.

They are there precisely for this reason of aiding British nationals in legal matters such as this. If he has insurance, he could claim on the legal aid it may provide.

Why would he be scarred to request help from the embassy if he's so innocent?
