Basic schooling would end with the end of sixth grade, and vocational/career oriented schooling would begin starting with the next school year.

No because at sixth grade over half of the kids don't know what they want to do with their life.

I am interested in learning more about how Japan educates their children. If I'm not mistaken, everyone is guaranteed an eighth grade education. After that, students who earn the right to go on do so. Those whose grades are low are taught a trade. I think this might be the motivation some of our American students need to do better in school.

No way! Kids don't even learn enough before they graduate at the end of 12th grade. I'm a Journalist, and it amazes me how poorly kids these days can spell. If we gave up on them after the end of the 6th grade and let them pick their classes, it would spell out ruin for their generation. No pun intended. ;)
