In almost all countries in the world hitchhiking is legal. Walking on highways is usually illegal in Western Europe.
In North America hitchhiking is forbidden in some areas, such as near prisons. In some cases, a local government, such as New York City where hitchhiking is widely considered very dangerous, may ban it altogether. Certain US states have created conditional bans, such as Utah, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada; it is frequently illegal on the actual shoulder of Interstate highways, but is usually legal from highway on-ramps. Nevada, for instance, bans hitchhiking, or signaling for a ride, altogether, but walking on rural interstates is permitted. The same law applies in Wyoming. On the other hand, the state of Oregon (with the exception of counties in the tri-met bus system--Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington) permits the freedom of hitchhiking as well as walking right on the Interstate. Oklahoma, for instance only expressly bans pedestrians and hikers on tolled interstates-the free ones are 'ok', provided one is in a safe area for cars to briefly pull over. Many Canadian highways similarly have hitchhiking bans.
So while it is conditionally legal in some places and illegal or forbidden in others, to me it is just damn stupid especially with all the psychos out there

yes and very dangerous I hitched all over in the late 60's and early 70's but is a different time now then everyone did it now people kill for the pleasure of it it's not safe to drive your own car or to take public transportation it's not safe to sit on your own porch so to hitch and get into a strangers car with the world like it is now is just crazy.

the laws vary state by state. however, if one is seen hitch=hiking on the freeways in this country, most likely a state trooper will pull over and ask you what you are doing! so probably not in most states! after all, we have the 1st amendment right? so that should include the right to move where one wants to go!

It varies by state in the U.S. In some places hitchhiking is only illegal on major thoroughfares (like Interstates), some places it is illegal any place.
For example, in Minnesota, the law is:
169.22 HITCHHIKING; SOLICITATION OF BUSINESS.
Subdivision 1. Soliciting ride. No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of
soliciting a ride from the driver of any private vehicle.
("Roadway" is defined as that portion of a highway improved, designed, or
ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive of the sidewalk or shoulder.)
Thus, in Minnesota, it appears that, so long as there's a shoulder, hitchhiking is legal.
(Edit: One thing I haven't looked at is any regulation prohibiting foot trafic on highways or interstates, which I believe is forbidden just about everywhere.)

Some states and some cities have laws against it, but for the most part its legal, but you just have to be careful not to get hit by a vehicle, and who or what is picking you up??????
