Sounds like you are using the wrong printer driver. If the printer used to work then select Control Panel->printers and see if the dot matrix printer is still the default. If now set it to the default and try again.
If this is a new printer then make sure that you use the correct driver of the printer.

If you are using Windows, you'll need to see which printer that it emulates, then install that driver in the add printer wizard.
