In today's litigious business climate, a potential employer WILL check the references of anyone that they are considering hiring.
HOWEVER, most of the references supplied by prior employers are extremely vague and usually only confirm your dates of employment. They won't give you a bad reference because you could then sue them for slander, libel, etc...
They don't like giving a good reference because if you later do something horrible while working for the new employer, then the new employer could sue them for lying or omission. A good example of this is the case(s) of the "Nurse of Death". [The nurse that has intentionally caused the deaths of patients at successive health care facilities.]

They don't check....and if they do its only one. WHy? because they know its all staged. YOu only put referances that have warned and talked to about using them as referances. YOu have coached them on what to say everything is staged.
THe only reason a company would check is to see if you are real and indeed work....referances are so staged its really funny to give a recruiter referances that you know are all staged. References are a waste, don't worry about them. If you lack referances make some up and coach these folks on thier new identity....Remember HR folks are stupid. Is easy to stage your referances everybody does it.

Yes, we do check references, we check education (so don't lie about a high school diploma or college degree), and employment information - where you worked, dates, and position you held. Best not to lie on an application!

Big companies check because they have someone whose job is to do that. In small companies, I have found that they wait for you to screw up, THEN check. Most people who fake their resume end up not doing a great job, so they get caught and then the next employer finds out, too.

I always check at least one reference for each person we want to interview. If we are not interested in an applicant, then we don't check.

Most do check, but a few don't. It's always wise to make it a point to to assume they are going to, and tell the truth.

Yes, some do if they are really interested in you. Some will just ask to have on file.

The company I work for does.
And if someone exaggerates or lies they will not be hired.
