If the hospice was near me I would have pitched in with you. The only cause I would support is children. I've got a mortgage to pay too - but there's always a little time available to help children - usually by laying in a bath full of beans all afternoon or waxing my body. What's in it for me ? They are our future.

It's difficult because most people have mortgages to pay and so need a pay check. Either that or they're raising their children and can't spare the time.
If you don't have rent or mortgage to pay then you're either very rich or live with your parents - both are hard to find who want to work for free. That just leaves people who do a full time job and are willing to spare a few hours a week (like Specials in the Police) and wives who have no children and a husband who earns enough to keep them both. In my experience they are often at a loose end but tend to fill up their days with shopping / nail salons and lunch.

If you are asking what charitable cause would I contribute my time and effort to, I'm working now on establishing a system of dog parks in my county.
If you are really asking what you get out of all the unpaid hours of labor, there are compensations: psychic income, experience, practice at some kind of unfamiliar skill. What's in it for you depends upon what you put into it.

anything to do with children, elderly and special needs.
If i had loads of free time i would willingly work for free (unfortunatly with 2 kids hubby work & hse to keep i have none)
i've always said that if i won the lottery i would open a huge rest bite centre for familys that need regular help & i'd send children to fantastic places they could only dream of.
Wish me luck with the lottery thing and well done u for helping when u can x x

If I could afford to and the work was for a good cause, I would do it for free.
