A prepaid credit card- like a VISA gift card. You can get them at most banks. A digital camera with a few extra memory cards.

There are a lot of good suggestions but i think you should give him two things...
1. Money - cause any 26 yr old wants that
2. Something Sentimental - like a little photo album with family and pet pictures
You of course will be getting the obligatory phone call about 2 months after he arrives. It goes "mom someone stole my wallet i need to pay the rent or we will be kicked out..." So I suggest when you give him the money, before he leaves, don't give it all at once!

Hmm, let's see. My son spent six months abroad at the University of Queensland, and I am thinking what I sent with him. A journal is always good, and maybe international phone cards. Of course, make sure he has the correct adapters for electrical gadgets he may use, pictures of friends and family. One of my friends gave their son, (don't laugh) a copy of a children's book entitled, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Day, Very Bad Day" and had crossed out parts of the book and written in things appropriate to her son's life. (If you get the book, you will know what I mean. It ends with Alexander wishing to move to Australia.) If he is going to be near the ocean, any type of beachwear, etc. would be ok. A good small camera, if he does not have one would be good. Hope your son is very happy there, and it would be great if you could visit!

You can't go wrong giving him cash as this will be the most useful gift you could give him. You know how you never seem to have enough money when you're away, well if you supplement his savings you can at least rest easy knowing he won't run out too quickly and end up eating out of a dumpster!!

There is usual things like money, clothing..etc
but I'm thinking also, why not a photo album with lots of family photos and special events, after all he is bound to get home sick even though I'm sure he will love Australia, it still won't have you in it too

something practical - rucksack, walking boots, maybe do a package of small things like suncream, torch, first aid kit. Not sure if your son is the outdoor type but australia is very much an outdoor country. Hope he enjoys himself.
PS - Patrick - just the one??

A lot of good ideas. I second the ones suggesting appropriate clothing, an mp3 player, and maybe phone and calling cards. Above all: CASH!

When I was backpacking the thing I missed most was my music and I could've really done with an MP3 player (though they weren't around back then). You could even record a little message on it he could listen to if he got homesick
