File in small claims court or call judge Judy.

It isn't a mechanic's lein (thats for someone who works on your house attaches a bill to the property), its just a small claims judgement you are going for. That will allow you to try to attach wages and ding their credit.

You can't.

A mechanics lien is what you put on real property (house or building) if you for example did a remodeling job and they didn't pay you. Or you did plumbing work or something like that. You file a lien against the property. That doesn't mean you'd get your money right away. It just means that if they ever tried to sell the property, they'd have to settle all the leans first.

The money your roommate owes you is bills. You can file a small claims court case against him. If you get a judgment and he till doesn't pay you, you might be able to file a lien against his car but most states won't let you file a lien against someone house for unpaid bills unless they fall under the mechanics lien category.

Well, to start with, you have to have a judgement for payment from the court. Then and only then can you put any lien on the ex-roomates property. But, he has to own property to begin with.
Did you have a lease? Or is it verbal? How long was he there? Can you prove in a court of law that he owes these bills?
You need to provide a little more information to get some advise.

You have to file paperwork with the court and you will need to show documents to prove he owes the money. He may contest the bill in court, and even if you win, you may never get any money.

I don't think that's the right thing to do. I think you need to sue him in small claims court. Be sure to have all the paperwork you can find, in order.
