I do believe it was Primo Levi... he was a great author, and when I finished one of his books and heard he died, I was rather shocked.

A quick search didn't turn up much else that seemed to be relevant. :) While 1987 isn't very recent, it's still much closer to today than some other authors.

I did find an article from the NYTimes that may be of some help:

"Many Holocaust survivors who became writers eventually killed themselves, even though the suicide rate among the general Holocaust survivor population is notably low. In addition to Levi and Celan, Jerzy Kosinski, Jean Améry, Piotr Rawicz and Tadeusz Borowski all took their own lives. Bruno Bettelheim could be added to this list, although he was primarily a psychologist and not a writer. Each of these writers ended their lives without providing a note of explanation. Maintaining a writing life where art and atrocity exist in such close proximity to each other apparently can be toxic."

Could you be thinking of Primo Levi? He was an Italian chemist and writer who survived Auschwitz....he died in 1987, from a nasty fall down a long flight of stairs. While some believe the fall may have been accidental, Levi's bouts of depression and suicidal ideation support the broader opinion that he threw himself down the stairs.

I`m not certain what are You asking for? Information about some Nazi (think it was Eichmann that came up with the idea of "Final solution") or are You looking for a writer, poet, painter that survived the holocaust.
