since vista came on the market nearly every time i load windows xp with the internet connected windows explorer crashes, is it my pc or are microsoft playing games, its ok when i am not connected to the net.

Yes.. With my Windows XP.. Only way I was able to fix it.. Given my limited knowledge of the subject matter was to reformat the entire computer. After a couple hours of trial and error. Reformatting worked out for the best.

Sounds like you have picked up a virus many types are known to turn the computer off when connecting to the net.
Before you connect to the net click on start / run and type in shutdown -a (space before -a) then click on ok or press enter.
Now connect to the net if your machine does not shut down you have a virus.
Run a full scan
