If you want funny Durrell you must read Stiff Upper Lip, a series of vignettes about life in the diplomatic corps (he worked as a press officer so witnessed it all up close). Alexandria Quartet is the most famous, but long and at times quite pretentious. Try the Black Book, darkly funny, with emphasis on the dark.

Well, You should switch to reading Terry Pratchett. As for Darrell, I prefer "Alexandrian quartet".
